Luckily, the track ball that you normally on the predecessors cannot be seen on this series and it’s replaced with much stronger and solid trackpad. And with the thickness of 1 centimeter, this phone is really thin. In fact, this phone is the thinnest cell phone in Blackberry series.

Design

Blackberry Bold 9900 runs in the same concept design of its predecessor, Bold 900. However, with the appearance of trackpad and touch screen element, this phone is definitely better than Bold 900. The QWERTY keyboard on this phone is designed in the shape of candy bar and the buttons are really functional and comfortable to press.

The trackpad is also the one other great thing from this series. Unlike the track ball, this one is built in the solid shape and guaranteed will not break in the long period of usage.

On the right side of device, some media dedicated buttons can be found here. While the port for micro USB and 3.5mm headphone jack are placed on the left side. Unfortunately, the Hot Swap for microSD card is not included on this series. So removing the external memory can be done inside the battery cover. So it’s kind of bothering for users that already love the Hot Swap.

Interface and Functionality

The screen also gets the best treatment from the vendor. Providing 640x480 pixels and 16M colors on the 2.8 inch screen, the screen of this phone looks delicate and amazingly good. With the partition of -286 ppi (pixel per inch), everything that is presented on the screen looks really sharp and satisfying to see. The capacitive sensor also makes it comfortable in controlling the user interface. Embedded on the front side of device, above the QWERTY keyboard, the screen looks wide.

Camera

Blackberry Bold 9900 has been equipped with 5MP camera on the back. The picture quality on this phone can be considered as good as the photo quality on the Blackberry Torch. In indoor area with pretty low light quality, objects can still be captured nicely by the camera. In much darker area, the LED flash can also be utilized to snap photos, which also delivers pretty good photo quality. The video recording on this phone is also pleasing, especially it already has the HD video quality.

Connectivity

On the connectivity, Research in Motion also takes this aspect seriously. For internet browsing, this phone has been provided with HSDPA and WiFi connection. So surfing internet either in your house or on the go in hotspot area can still be accommodated well on this series. The built-in web browser of this phone has supported HTML 5, so any light or heavy web page can be fully presented in the web browser.

Sending or receiving data or files with other cell phones can be done perfectly with the help from Bluetooth. GPS is also not forgotten to add on this series, giving you the facility to search location via Blackberry Maps.

Performance

Unlike the predecessors, this phone has already been injected with Research in Motion owned latest operating system, Blackberry OS 7. Powered by 1.2 GHz processor, which is above the standard of smart phones, the whole performance of this phone is fluid and smooth, although sometimes, lags happen in certain moment. Surfing internet also gets the impact from its hardware performance.

User interface looks really great with much better presented graphics and visual display on the screen is enhanced. Menu and application icons look more attractive and colorful. There is a feature called Liquid Graphics that enables this phone to accelerate the rendering process in the user interface. So definitely, user interface is well accommodated on this series.

Blackberry Messenger

One of the best things that makes people want to buy Blackberry is absolutely the feature called Blackberry Messenger. With this feature, Blackberry users can have a chatting room to communicate with their friends and family by sharing their own PIN number. On this phone, of course, this feature will be provided on this series, just like on the predecessors.

Texting or sending file via BBM is really fast and smooth. Windows Live Messenger can also be found on this phone. As well as Push Email, with the ability that enables you to set 10 email accounts at once. And the great thing is it will be presented in real time mode.

Office Doc Viewer Application
If you have a homework or job from your office, the Document viewer called Docs to go has been added on this phone to make it easier for you in opening and editing any documents. And the best thing from this feature is that the version of its Document viewer is the full or premium version.

Anyway, besides using the Blackberry OS 7, this phone can also run Java applications across MIDP 2.1. The market place for Java applications called Blackberry App World is also installed to help you find any free or paid java applications for this phone.

Data Storage

Blackberry Bold 9900 comes with 8GB internal memory in default. However, if you want to expand the storage, you can also buy an external microSD card up to 32GB.

Battery Life

The battery life of Blackberry Bold 9900 can be considered as pretty good. Moreover, Research in Motion claims that the Blackberry OS 7 on this series doesn’t drain the battery life that much. However, in the implementation, doing Blackberry Messenger, browsing internet, opening applications, or receiving email could drain the battery life pretty faster.

Conclusion

Bottom line, the touch screen technology and the latest installment of Blackberry OS 7 are 2 of the most prominent things on Blackberry Bold 9900. The Blackberry OS 7 also gives pretty good improvement on this series, compared to the predecessors. So if you are a truly Blackberry fan, this phone is definitely a worth buying smart phone.
