Ouya" is coming to console gaming industry in upcoming future. OH YEAH!!
Anyway, have you heard the one called Ouya. If you haven't, then read on.
OUYA: A New Device that Will Take Android to The Next Level
Nowadays, the use of smartphone has been revolutionized as not just a device to make a call or to send text messages, but it’s becoming much more complex and sophisticated than before. Things like watching movies, reading e-Books, listening to music, browsing internet and even PLAYING GAMES now can be done conveniently with our smartphone or tablet.
And that’s the reason why there are some creative people or company out there that are gathered in Kickstarter project and they have many crazy ideas to develop new innovative devices. OUYA is one of those projects.
What is OUYA?
Ouya is a console gaming device running on Android that will be designed by Yves Behar (the person behind products like Jawbone Jambox) with Julie Uhrman will also take part in this Kickstarter project.
Currently, they are still raising fund for this “Ouya” project. But turns out, now they have successfully managed to collect over $2 million within 1 day or so.
This amount comes so surprising because it just crossed the original expectation from the maker of the device, which actually only needs around $1 million to fund the project. And even more amazing, I also just heard that the fund now has surpassed almost $3.2 million in just one day or so. Incredible, isn't it?
How to Develop Games for OUYA?
Anyway, unlike other console gaming devices around the market (e.g., PS3, XBOX 360, etc), Ouya doesn’t want to get involved with third parties in publishing the games for the device, which means, there will be no shipment costs, packaging costs, licensing cost or any other related expenses being burdened to the game publishers/developers.
So every game running on Android platform can be published on OUYA and the developers can freely set the prices of their games.
What Games that Will be Available for OUYA?
Currently, there is only a few of Android games that are well-optimized for Ouya. One of them is ShadowGun, a 3rd person shooter game developed by MadfingerGames, which also makes "Dead Trigger", a 1st person zombie shooter game.
Dead Trigger is actually an Android title that has been perfectly-optimized for Tegra3-built devices, so practically, all of Android games that are already optimized for Tegra3 devices will be able to play on Ouya (e.g,. Horn).
But that doesn't mean that other simple Android games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Paper Toss, card games or any simple online casino games won't be able to play on this console. Of course, Ouya will still be capable of running those simple games, especially seeing their popularity on any App markets (i.e., App Store, Google Play, Amazon App Store, etc).
When Will OUYA Project Come to Fruition and What Are the SPECS of OUYA?
This “Ouya” Kickstarter project is expected to finalize next year and the device itself will likely arrive in March 2013. Anyway, if you’re curious with the specs of this device, Ouya comes with some powerful stuff, like Tegra 3 quad-core processor (of course), 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. And if those already make you drool with saliva, then this one might make the drooling even more wet.
- Android 4.0
- Tegra3 quad-core processor
- 8GB of internal flash storage
- 1GB RAM
- USB 2.0 (one)
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- ETHERNET! (Announced by Muffi 7/18)
- WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
How Much Will it Cost?
According to the source, Ouya is stated will be priced for only $99, and that includes 1 wireless controller. But if you want to buy 1 more extra controller, you can freely get it for only $30. Isn’t cheap, huh?
With the sales of smartphones and the mobile games have surpassed almost every field in gaming industry, even the sales of PSP and other Sony dedicated gaming handheld devices around the market, then it’s possible that the popularity of console gaming devices could finally be stolen by mobile gaming devices in the future.
So if you are already excited with this news, then you can help the creator of Ouya by contributing your money to their Kickstarter project. Even a small amount of money means a lot to them. Really.
UPDATE: Now the OUYA project has successfully collected almost $8,596,475 for the funding. And it's the final.
